Jozef Linnig’s drawings have an important place in the Print Cabinet. They are the best contemporary documentation of how Antwerp looked in the 19th century, before the emergence of photography. In 1864, the city’s appearance changed dramatically, with the demolition of the Spanish fortifications and the straightening of the quays.
Plantin printed books in several languages (2005) by Plantin-Moretus House-Workshops-Museum Complex UNESCO World Heritage. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, many learned refugees arrived in Europe with their books and their knowledge of Greek and other languages. This resulted in a surge in the study of languages. In 1576, Plantin relocated his printing works to the Vrijdagmarkt. His family lived and worked there for three hundred years. They converted the ‘Gulden Passer’ (‘Golden Compasses’) into a beautiful mansion. The Moretus family cherished their printing works, which had become a part of Antwerp’s heritage.
